How Long Does a Repo Stay on Your Credit?
A repossession can stay on your credit report for 7 years from the date of the first missed payment that led to the repo. Here's how the timeline works — and the dispute process credit repair professionals use to remove a repossession early.
The 7-Year Rule
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), most negative items — including repossessions — can only be reported for 7 years. The clock starts on the date of first delinquency, not the date the vehicle was repossessed or the date you stopped paying entirely.
- Voluntary repossessions follow the same 7-year rule as involuntary ones.
- A repossession damages your score whether you paid the deficiency balance or not.
- Paying off the deficiency updates the status but does not delete the entry.
How to Get a Repo Off Your Credit
You don't have to wait 7 years. If the repossession is inaccurate, unverifiable, or improperly reported, it can be removed through a structured dispute process.
1. Pull your 3 credit bureau reports
Check Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Compare the repo entry across all three — dates, balances, account numbers, and status often don't match. Every inconsistency is grounds for a dispute.
2. Audit the reporting for errors
Common issues: incorrect dates of first delinquency, wrong balances, missing notice of right to cure, duplicate listings, or the lender reporting both a charge-off and a repo for the same account.
3. Dispute with the credit bureaus
Send written disputes to each bureau identifying the specific inaccuracies. Under the FCRA, they have 30 days to verify the information with the furnisher. If verification fails, the entry must be removed.
4. Dispute directly with the furnisher
Send a separate dispute to the lender that repossessed the vehicle. They are required to investigate and either correct or delete the inaccurate information.
5. Escalate if needed
If the repo remains and you have documented FCRA violations, escalation options include method-of-verification requests, CFPB complaints, and (when appropriate) consumer-rights attorneys.
